Race footage: Ledecky wins 800; Phelps seventh in free

 The first day of competition at USA Swimming Nationals was hardly what anyone expected.

Michael Phelps finished seventh, missing even a spot on the 4×100-meter freestyle relay at the Pan Pacific Championships later this month. Katie Ledecky won the 800 freestyle, but her time wasn’t even close to her world record time from June’s Woodlands Senior Invite in Texas.

Missy Franklin showed that the collegiate pool hasn’t dulled her long-course speed by running down sprint star Simone Manuel in the women’s 100 free. And Tom Shields, a former collegiate and high school star, reminded swim fans that he was once the most promising young butterflier in the country with a convincing swim-from-the-front victory in the 200 butterfly.
